Merchants & Planters Bank

Merchant's and Planter's Bank was located on the north side of the square on the northeast corner of what are now Second Street and Madison Avenue. Notice that the entire bank was capitalized at $140,000. While that was a large sum of money in the 1920's when this ad was printed, in 2007 it is the cost of a single middle-income home. This is a graphic example of the erosion of the purchasing power of U.S. currency.

Unlike today, undertaking used to be a side-line business. Notice that in addition to furniture and vehicles that Fuller and Swint sells undertakers' supplies.
Two of Mt. Pleasant's first undertakers were Riddle and Stephenson Furniture and Undertaking, located on the east side of the square, and Thomas Hardware and Undertaking, located on the north side of the square.
