Cane Growing in Titus County
Robert & Mary Turner's A Glimpse of Titus County, Texas History
A considerable number of Titus County farmers grew cane for many years.  Two types of cane were grown here - ribbon cane and sorghum.  Many farmers grew ribbon cane, which they later turned into ribbon cane syrup.  Almost every small community in Titus County at one time had someone who operated a small syup mill where they made their own syup and processed their neighbor's cane into syup.

Ribbon cane stalks were also once commonly found in grocery stores, where customers would buy a stalk to slice into small pieces that they would chew.

Sorghum cane was also grown in Titus County.  Most of it was used as livestock feed, but in the latter 1950s the Mt. Pleasant/Titus County Chamber of Commerce experimented with making sorghum syrup.  The adventure was unsuccessful, but is an interesting story because the mill they used to make the syup was one of the largest in Northeast Texas.
